It was an incredible performance and a day to remember for a long time for the Dutch rider of Alé - Cipollini, who took an impressive victory in the opening stage (Villadiego - Villadiego, 109.5 km) of the Vuelta a Burgos. Karlijn was very strong today, first in a group with 20 riders that was very close to be chased by the peloton on the climb at 20 kms to go. Swinkels could keep her energies for the final, being 3rd on the top of the climb, then attacking two times. Finally the sprint where her teammates could bring her in the best position to find the win, beating her compatriot Marissa Baks and the Italian Silvia Magri. It’s the first win overall in the Elite Category for the #YellowFluoOrange rider.

The provisional leaderships in the GC and in the Points Classification go to Karlijn Swinkels as well. In 2016 she became Junior World Champion in the Individual Time Trial race of Doha (Qatar).

Quotes by Karlijn Swinkels: “It was an amazing day! We got a gap and I was with other 20 riders in a group, then the group had only 35’’ from us. I could keep energies to arrive third on the climb, then to attack twice and to win! The team believed in me and I feel very grateful for this chance. I started my sprint at 400 meters and I won, my teammates and Staff with the Sports Director Giuseppe Lanzoni have been awesome!”

The Stage 2 will take place tomorrow: it starts and ends in Poza de la Sal and the finish is uphill.
